Wisconsin-ites Stricker and Wilson Stay Hot in the Winter

Steve Stricker and Mark Wilson have certainly become household names in the world of professional golf. One man has showcased an uncanny level of consistency despite injury, and the other has won three times in just over one calendar year. Both men have relatively “average” games in comparison to their fellow competitors on TOUR, but their recent success is undoubtedly envied by many peers.

Oh, and both men are from Wisconsin and apparently play better when their home state is covered in snow. Read more of this post

Fantasy Golf Picks: Sony Open in Hawaii

The PGA TOUR remains in Hawaii this week as the Sony Open tees off tomorrow morning. Defending champion Mark Wilson captured his first of two titles in this event in 2011, which makes him this week’s “favorite pick”. Steve Stricker also returns to action after his victory at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Click the jump to see my fantasy golf picks for the 2012 Sony Open in Hawaii. Read more of this post

PGA Television Should Take a Page From MNF’s Playbook

Chances are if you are reading this blog, you have the ability to read about and watch golf on television while maintaining a certain level of interest. Listening to announcers provide shot-by-shot analysis on the course has become second nature for you, and you may even have opinions on your favorite “golf-TV personality” (I’m a David Feherty fan, for instance). Furthermore, you may also enjoy the relaxing, traditional, and often monotone insights provided to the viewer during telecasts on a Sunday afternoon.

But as the PGA TOUR plans to experiment more with Monday evening tournament finishes during primetime (when applicable to daylight, as is the case with today’s final round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions), should broadcast companies also experiment with how these rounds are covered? Thoughts on Cog Hill’s Downfall

As a topic that has been discussed rather frequently around the PGA TOUR and the Chicago area, what is happening/has occurred at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club is a damn shame. Having spoken to a few individuals who are close to the situation, I have finally gotten a tighter grasp on what exactly transpired over the last few years in Lemont, Illinois… and it appears that this debacle is really the Jemsek Family’s fault (Steve Stricker was right!).

As one individual with knowledge of the situation put it, the Jemsek’s sought the quick/big dollars and brighter spotlight, and it has come back to bite them in the [you know where]. This happened in two ways. Read more of this post

2011 BMW Championship: Final PGA Event at Cog Hill?

Last season, the 2010 BMW Championship player field panned Cog Hill Golf & Country Club for its “bumpy greens”, overgrown collars, and “silly” layout. Thanks to the 2008 Rees Jones rennovation a few years prior, many PGA players were left less-than-pleased with many features of what was once considered one of Chicagoland’s greatest courses. What followed was, quite literally, a war of words between PGA TOUR players and Western Golf Association officers, including course owner Joe Jemsek (who blamed the spotty Midwestern weather for the poor playing conditions a year ago).

In 2011, however, many players are saying the course has improved in terms of cosmetic value, however the layout is still “sad” for a test that many players once loved during the Western Open years. With all things considered, then, should this be the final year any PGA event is held at the Lemont, Illinois track? Read more of this post
